A Good Chiropractor Can Be a Pregnant Woman’s Treasured Friend
Many pregnant patients that I treat are please to find out the the chiropractic manipulation I administer is very helpful in reliving their low back pain but is also very gentle.
This peer-reviewed article that searched the scientific literature for articles that involved chiropractic care and pregnancy was published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies , March 2012.
Low back pain in pregnancy has been reported to occur as often as 85% of of the time. Even worse, at two to three years postpartum, up to to 20% of these women still report persistent pain.
Although low back pain is considered a common complaint during pregnancy, it can have a major impact on quality of life. Most often it is difficult to perform normal activities of daily activities like bending over, sitting, lifting and most important sleeping through the night.
Low Back Pain is a Mechanical Problem Requiring a Mechanical Solution
There are several reasons why this occurs. The most obvious is that the extra weight puts increased pressure on the joints in the low back and pelvis. This results in the deep inner muscles of the spine goping into spasm and locking up the joints. Gentle chiropractic manipulation is a mechanical treatment that uses extremely fast but extremely low force thrust to break up the spasm and reduce pain.
It is my recommendation that after the baby is born a follow up to check how the joints in the back and pelvis are moving. If there are areas that are reduced in movement, gentle chiropractic adjustments can restore them to normal function. This in my opinion will reduce the likely hood of long term and recurrent pain.
