Zilahy Wellness Center offers holistic care

By Diane J. Ploch
Dr. Peter Zilahy is a doctor of chiropractic and founder of Zilahy Wellness Center in Watertown. In his 36 years of practice, he has kept his focus on natural medicine yet continues to evolve with the times, incorporating new technology and treatments.
Zilahy Wellness Center, located at 35 Candee Hill Road in Watertown, offers comprehensive acupuncture, chiropractic, and nutrition care. Dr. Zilahy believes that health is not just feeling good – and not just the absence of pain, disease or infirmity, but it is actually the optimum function of your body, mind and social well-being.
“When your spine’s in line, you feel fine,” Dr. Zilahy said.
He explained that chiropractic adjustments help the joints to move properly; and properly functioning joints help power the brain by allowing nerve impulses to flow through. Where traditional medicine focuses on and is excellent at diagnostics, acute and crisis care, Dr. Zilahy utilizes natural methods that will often avoid the need for drugs or surgery. To maximize his chiropractic care, Dr. Zilahy often prescribes exercise and coaches his patients about proper nutrition to maintain body function. When appropriate, he uses acupuncture as a complementary therapy to help restore balance in the body.
New options add to natural treatment approach
Dr. Zilahy has recently added cold laser therapy as a treatment option, especially used for conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and injuries or sprains. This is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes to alter cellular function and energize body tissue. Dr. Zilahy likens it to how chlorophyll works to absorb sunlight and helps sustain the life processes of plants.
“The low-level light therapy activates our own cells to produce more energy, increase blood flow and decrease inflammation to heal quicker,” Dr. Zilahy said.
Dr. Zilahy uses it in combination with chiropractic care, nutrition counseling and acupuncture, as appropriate. The number of sessions of cold laser therapy needed can vary from a few to a dozen, depending on the person’s condition.
New on the nutritional side of care at Zilahy Wellness Center are bone morphogenic proteins in pill form, used to help grow and stimulate collagen and connective tissue. This is especially beneficial for arthritis and can be used long-term or short-term to speed recovery.
Going beyond
the treatment room
Zilahy Wellness Center offers a holistic approach to health care, with treatments that may appear to be beyond the ordinary and facilities beyond the typical examining and treatment rooms. You may experience the whole body vibration machine, spinal decompression therapy or an ergonomic consultation. Downstairs is a rehab facility filled with exercise equipment used by patients to attain dynamic core stabilization.
“You want to be able to have your spine in a dynamic stable position, allowing your body to move comfortably in a coordinated fashion when adjusting to various demands on the spine – whether you are lifting something, going about normal activities or if you happen to trip or fall,” said Dr. Zilahy.
Various pieces of equipment allow patients to work on specific muscle groups as well as balance.
Next door, Dr. Zilahy has recently opened Refresh Rejuvenating Spa & Salon, making the connection that “outer beauty radiates from inner health.” He sees himself and Zilahy Wellness Center as a resource for expanding credible information on health, with the spa as a venue for people to learn options for health and beauty care.
Dr. Zilahy has been a long-time member of the Watertown-Oakville Chamber of Commerce and in recent years has been a board member of the Health Care Council of the Waterbury Regional Chamber.
He values those connections and said, “I believe in community and supporting and helping local businesses.”
